M & D Session at SAICSIT

Mr Anesu Marufu, a first year Masters of Science in Computer Science within the Telkom Centre of Excellence, attended the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT) conference which was held in Centurion - Tshwane, on the 1st to 3rd October 2012.

Mr Marufu attended the Masters and Doctorate symposium to present his work on "Security enhancement framework for mobile commerce in an ICT4D context" which essentially looks at undertaking an extensive evalution of security threats on mCommerce platform usage in Information and Communication Technologies for Development contexts and subsequently drawing up a framework to inform deployment of such services and platforms in rural marginalized communities.

"It is imperative to note that the experience was eye-opening. I also managed to get linked to some great researchers, though they were not directly in my field of study", said Mr Marufu in a recollection about some of the benefits of having attended the SAICSIT conference.

Attending such conferences affords the students an opportunity to engage with their peers in areas of their research, and also to leverage the expertise and experience of some of the leaders in these fields of research. The students are able to network and engage collaboratively with other researchers whie at the same time being exposed to the research dynamics from other institutions.

This year the Centre has sent researchers to the following conferences :

  • IST Africa 2012 conference in Dar es salaam - Tanzania
  • ECIS2012 in Barcelona - Spain
  • SATNAC conferece in George - South Africa
  • SAICSIT conference in Centurion - South Africa

with the last conference attendance of the year being ZA_WWW conference in Durban beginning of November.
