eServices platform for rural marginalized communities

This is the over-arching project of the Telkom Centre of Excellence for the 2010 to 2012 cycle. This is a built-up on the following previous two THRIP cycles :

  • 2007 - 2009 (Multi-function communication platform) : This project was a logical built-up of the eCommerce platform project. The aim of the this project was to extend the offering of eServices in Dwesa to include other relevant services. This therefore saw the development of eJudiciary and eGoverment services. At the same time the eCommerce portal was augmented with further functionality to increase its effectiveness (i.t.o. marketing and customer loyalty) and efficiency. The other component of the project focused on the supporting distributed network (WiMAX backbone with VSAT connection to the Internet), to provide mechanisms to ensure network reliability, to apportion network usage costs in a context-sensitive manner, and extend the reach of the network to the individuals (through wireless hotspots).

Future Of Mobile Commerce

By following the current trends, it is becoming more adn more evident that life on the internet/the web in general is being concatinated into one managable platform; the mobile handheld device. And with the further developments taking place its highly likely that money shall be exchanged or made use of in electronic form only. The question is therefore if this happens to be the case, what implications might this have on the level of security a single device might require?what security features will be made a requirement in application,or device,or operating system development?

Cloud Computing for ICT4D

"Another interesting data point is that mobile phone communication and applications play key roles in driving the economic development agenda in these nations. Here we are not talking about mobile applications that use high speed 2G/3G/4G mobile networks for sending and receiving data. Instead, we are referring to content services that use plain old SMS text messaging for transmitting information."
